The first leg of the UEFA Conference League play-off round saw Larne host Gibraltar’s Lincoln Red Imps in a match that could have finished goalless. Red Imps had held firm after Yussef Flalhi received a red card in the 29th minute, leaving the 10-man side to defend a slim advantage. Larne, the Irish League champions, were determined to turn the tide.
Late Goals Secure Cushion
Paul O’Neill, who had been on the bench, was introduced with a quarter of an hour remaining. He struck with an emphatic finish eight minutes later, giving Larne a 1-0 lead. The Irish side’s momentum continued when substitute Kevin O’Hara scored a stoppage-time breakaway, sealing a 2-0 victory. The win gives Larne a cushion for the second leg at Inver Park next Thursday and moves them into the league phase for the second time in three years.
O’Neill on Experience
O’Neill, who began the match as a substitute, said the club’s experience in big games will be key. "It's a massive game for us next week,” he said. "We have to defend for our lives and when chances come, we have to take them."
He added that the core group of players has remained largely intact since the club’s first league title, bringing a wealth of experience from domestic and European competitions. "For the last four or five years we’ve been riddled with experience, so it’s good to have the know-how to get it over the line," O’Neill said.
The 2-0 result also puts Larne on the cusp of a seven-figure windfall for their exploits. O’Neill reflected on the match, saying, "We knew it was a tough place coming out here. It's good to come off the pitch with a win to take back to Inver Park next week."
Looking Ahead
With the cushion secured, Larne will focus on defending their advantage in the return leg. The club’s confidence is buoyed by the late goals and the experience of the squad. O’Hara’s stoppage-time breakaway goal sealed the 2-0 win.
