Larne beat Red Imps 2-0 to reach Conference League

First Leg at Europa Point

Larne’s first leg of the UEFA Conference League play-off against Gibraltar’s Lincoln Red Imps finished 2-0 in the Irish champions’ favour. The match was held at the Europa Point Stadium on 20 August. Larne’s manager Gary Haveron deployed a 4-3-3 formation, while Red Imps’ Juan Manuel Pavón used a 3-5-2.

The game began without much action, but the venue’s open side made for a windy atmosphere. Larne’s goalkeeper Rohan Ferguson made early saves, notably stopping a free-kick from Nano in the first half.

Key Moments

The first goal came in the 84th minute. Paul O'Neill, who had been introduced from the bench, headed home after a cross from Conor McKendry and a header by James Simpson. O'Neill’s finish was the result of a well-coordinated build-up involving three substitutes.

In stoppage time, Kevin O'Hara added the second goal. After O'Neill broke clear and laid the ball to O'Hara, the latter coolly finished into the corner of the net in the 90+2 minute.

Red Imps were reduced to ten men early when Yussef Flalhi Idrissi was sent off in the 28th minute. The dismissal followed a VAR-reviewed incident in which Idrissi was shown a red card for a punch after a confrontation with Larne midfielder Sean Graham.

Despite the numerical advantage, Red Imps struggled to create clear chances. Chris Gallagher’s long-range attempt was denied by Jaylan Hankins, and Matty Lusty’s attempts were cleared by Larne’s defenders. The match ended 2-0 in Larne’s favour.

Road to the Conference League

Larne entered the competition after winning the Irish Premiership. In July they defeated San Marino side Tre Fiori in the first qualifying round of the Champions League, before falling to Red Star Belgrade in the second round. After a loss to Georgian club Iberia 1999 in the Europa League third qualifying round, Larne dropped into the Conference League play-off.

With this victory, Larne will host the second leg of the play-off at Inver Park next Thursday, hoping to secure a place in the Conference League league stage for the second time in three years.
